We are always aware of safety. We are continually aware of all other children, adults and anything else that happens to enter the play space. The goal is always to keep everyone in the play space safe.
Our Play (the play AFTER the play)
Play is always voluntary. We invite each child out to play and each child decides for themselves when, how or if they want to play. We never coerce or cajole children into playing. Some children engage very quickly and others take longer. Play is always voluntary.
What is special about our way of playing with children?
When the play AFTER the play begins, what will you see?
Our play focuses on cooperation and empathy rather than on competition and resistance.
Our play is rooted in safety and trust, and communicates kindness and belonging.
Our play engages the whole child - all their senses and imagination.
As play specialists, we are here to model safety and kindness in all moments and in all interactions.
We (the play specialists) get down on the ground with the children.
By getting down on the ground, we send a clear message that we are here as playmates. This communicates that we will play on the same level within the guidelines of safety, trust, kindness and belonging.
We meet each child where they are. Whether the child is exuberant or cuddly, rambunctious or quiet, we respectfully join their quality of play. We meet the child fully and follow their lead while providing support, kindness and safety.
We model kind, safe touch.
Whether the child’s touch is gentle, rough or violent, we always respond with loving, gentle touch. Kind, safe touch communicates powerfully and without words, that we are all safe and lovable, and that we all belong.
