History

The Brooklyn Bay was founded in 2004 by Scott Kelman (1936-2007) and Melanya Helene as a home for the innovative performance work, Mindfulness-Based Improv. Since that time The Brooklyn Bay has produced several shows, most notably ‘Tao Soup’, which was considered to be Scott’s masterwork. Soon after it’s founding, Play after Play interactive children’s theater was conceived and created by Melanya Helene and Marc Otto.

Welcome to The Brooklyn Bay

The Brooklyn Bay is the home of Mindfulness-Based Improvisation and Play after Play interactive arts for children.

The Brooklyn Bay is a place for performances and workshops that awaken and inspire, that cultivate good humor and cheerfulness, that encourage us to lighten up and sink deeper.

The Brooklyn Bay is a sanctuary for slowing down - taking in - joining in empathy - discovering and creating together; performer/audience, teacher/ student - a place of Play for adults and children alike.

What is Mindfulness-Based Improvisation?

MBI is a mindfulness and body-based improvisational form for exploring the creative process, cultivating performance skills and developing performance pieces.

By yielding to our natural empathy - moving between self and other, body and space -, MBI  taps into the creative potential of both the individual and the ensemble.  By engaging other performers and the audience through awareness, movement, sound and words, the entire group discovers connection, meaning, narrative, and story; a collective dream. Through empathy, rhythm and energy the interplay between abandon and precision is explored.  Discoveries are made and shared between the performers, and between the performers and the audience.
